End Malaria Leadership Council launched at the World Economic Forum 2017

Bill Gates and Ray Chambers have convened the ‘End Malaria Council’ to keep the spotlight on the global campaign to eradicate malaria. The announcement was made during the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2017.

Bill Gates, co‐chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Ray Chambers, the United Nations Secretary‐General’s Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria, will lead a group of influential public and private sector leaders in the End Malaria Council. The aim of the Council is to to ensure that malaria continues to get the political support, funding and leadership that it needs to make global eradication a realistic goal.

“The next chapter of the fight against malaria starts now,” said Bill Gates, who co-authored a report with Chambers in 2015 called Aspiration to Action: What will it take to end malaria? “For the first time in history, we have a roadmap to a world without malaria ... With renewed focus, innovation and new commitments of leadership and funding, we can be the generation to end malaria once and for all."

The Council is comprised of nine founding members from across the world:

  • Ray Chambers, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria
  • Peter Chernin, Founder, Chernin Entertainment and The Chernin Group
  • Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive, Dangote Group H.E. Idriss Deby, President, Republic of Chad, representing the African Leaders Malaria Alliance H.E.
  • Jakaya Kikwete, Former President, United Republic of Tanzania Graca Machel, Founder, Foundation for Community Development, Mozambique
  • Luis Alberto Moreno, President, Inter-American Development Bank H.E.
  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President, Republic of Liberia

Members will work alongside the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and many other key stakeholders. Together they will prioritise the support needed to ensure that researchers, health workers and local governments are able to implement their plans on the ground, and complete their ambitious targets to end malaria.

The End Malaria Council is committed to supporting the critical juncture which we face.
