Dr Gustavo Romero is a medical doctor with 27-years of experience in clinical research. He has a PhD in Tropical Medicine from the University of Brasília. He currently works at the Centre for Tropical Medicine dedicated to research on leishmaniases, arboviral diseases and Covid-19, and as an Associate Professor in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Brasilia.

He led with the collaboration of DNDi the multicentric trial of efficacy and safety of drugs for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil that has been the landmark to guide the decision making of the officials of the Brazilian ministry of health to expand access to treatment with liposomal amphotericin B as a first-line drug in the country. He has played an ongoing advisory role to the Brazilian Ministry of Health and also collaborates with the Pan American Health Organisation in the development of policies for diagnosis and treatment of leishmaniases in the Americas.
