Javier Gabaldón is a senior medical doctor specialising in Tropical Medicine and Public Health, with more than 25 years’ experience as a project manager on strategy, policy and development in medical and humanitarian response, health and research policy in low and middle income countries. He has an extensive knowledge in emerging infections, public health and epidemiology, and a Masters in International Health and Tropical Medicine from the University of Barcelona, with specific training on epidemiology from the Medical Tropical Institute of Antwerp.

In 1992, having worked for UN agencies, Javier joined Médecins sans Frontières, as a Medical Coordinator and Head of Mission during humanitarian crises in Burundi, Rwanda, DRC, Somalia and Haiti  among others. In 1998, he led on the development and implementation of the organization’s strategy as Médecins Sans Frontières Operational director for five years.  

He has worked in more than 30 countries in Africa, Middle East America and Asia; and undertaken health development and humanitarian consultancies in a number of African, Central America and Caribbean countries for WHO, MSF, EU, among others.

From 2016, he has worked for the Médecins Sans Frontières Ebola Initiative as a Head of Mission on the Data-sharing Platform and Biobank for Ebola Virus Disease and other emergent pathogens.
