Erwan Piriou has been a laboratory advisor with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders for more than 10 years. He provides general strategic and technical support for diagnostic services in a portfolio of around 10 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In addition, he provides specific support in the areas of malaria and virology in MSF.

Before joining MSF, he worked as a postdoc in Kenya on the immunology of coinfections with malaria and Epstein-Barr virus, and in the Netherlands on immunological analyses in preclinical studies of new malaria vaccine candidates. He holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (on HIV-Epstein-Barr coinfections), and a MSc in biology from the University of Wageningen, Netherlands. His interest in diagnostics was sparked by working as a laboratory technician in a hospital in Djibouti during his national service.
